Cinabre in support of The French National Sea Rescue Society

Braving storms and raging seas, sea-rescue lifeguards certainly don't have the same kinds of summers as everyone else. Lucky enough to sail since I was a kid, launching a support initiative for the French National Sea Rescue Society – whose budget relies mainly on private donations – was a no-brainer, and important to me. Therefore, for summer 2022, Cinabre is releasing a cotton sarong made in France, giving free rein to the artist Hubert Poirot-Bourdain. For each sarong purchased, 50€ will be donated to the SNSM.

SOLIDARITY INITIATIVE

If you’re planning on clocking up some time at the beach this summer, you might as well do it lounging on an a sarong that gives you wings.

The purchase of each sarong results in a 50€ donation to the SNSM. This money will be used to train and equip the volunteers who often risk their lives to save us. - 1 sarong purchased = a new pair of binoculars for an SNSM base - 2 sarongs purchased = funding for life-saving training for on-board rescuers - 3 sarongs purchased = a new life jacket or a new pair of safety boots.

Support SNSM

Saving migrants from a shipwreck, evacuating people trapped by a waterfront fire, rescuing a drowning victim - these are just a few of the many actions the various SNSM stations in France carry out each year. If you so wish, you can also make a direct donation, get involved as a volunteer or purchase a solidarity gift to show your support (website is in French only).

BEACH LOVE

For our first solidarity sarong, we turned to Hubert Poirot-Bourdain, an artist with an ardent passion for the sea. Whether it be cover illustrations for L'Équipe or Le 1, collaborations with fashion designer Castelbajac, Atelier Saint Lazare, or designing a sail for the Charlotte Mery for the Challenge Espoir Mini Transat sailing event, Hubert is a hot commodity! But he immediately accepted our proposal, keen to help the SNSM.

The result? A sarong with an albatross flying peacefully above the water. Below we see an SNSM boat, which the bird seems to be watching over.  Hubert chose the albatross because it is a legendary bird of the Southern Ocean and Northern Pacific, the rare sighting of which provides comfort to seafarers in the often hostile lands of the southern seas, and is considered a sign of good luck. The caption below the drawing is a quote from Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner : "Enfin passa un albatros: il vint à travers le brouillard" (in English: "At length did cross an Albatross, Thorough the fog it came").

The design unfolds into a supersized sarong (180x100cm), handcrafted in the Monts du Lyonnais - the foothills of the Massif Central.
